MONTCLAIR, NJ — A hardware store in Montclair is closing after more than a century in business, reports say.

Saunders Hardware at 627 Valley Road was established in 1893 and has been serving the Montclair area since then – making it one of the town’s oldest operating businesses. But that will come to an end soon.

“I'm passed retirement age, so my wife wants me to retire – I want to retire - and this was an opportunity, so we took it,” said the store’s current owner, Tom Vultee.

A going out of business sale is currently taking place, and Vultee plans to officially close the store once most of the inventory is gone, News 12 New Jersey reported.

There is no final decision on what may happen to the building, which has been sold to one of Vultee’s longtime friends, Montclair Local reported.
