MONTCLAIR, NJ — Plans are in place to deal with the rising temperatures as Montclair enters the last month of the school year, the district’s superintendent says.
Superintendent Jonathan Ponds issued the following advisory to the school community on Friday:
“As we enter the last month of this school year, we want you to know that plans are in place to deal with extreme temperatures. Students will be encouraged to take water breaks, as it is vital to drink plenty of fluids, and nurses will be alert for any signs of heat exhaustion. There may be times when recess is restricted, and you will be notified no later than 6 a.m. if an early dismissal is being called.”
The district posted a heat advisory message on its website with more details about the plan. It includes:

- If the heat index (combination of heat and humidity) is/expected to be 95 degrees or above, an early dismissal may be declared.
- The weather forecast will be reviewed using multiple sources on both a daily and weekly basis. The superintendent will confer with essential staff to determine an appropriate plan of action.
- When a heat advisory is in effect, no outdoor recess will be allowed.
- Afterschool services will be offered at existing campuses provided there is an air-conditioned space available. The appropriate YMCA official will make the final decision in this regard.
AIR CONDITIONING
“Although we have measures to deal with extreme heat, we are encouraged by future plans for air conditioning which would alleviate much of our concerns,” Ponds wrote Friday.

“Thanks to a generous donation from the Nishuane PTA and work by the Buildings and Grounds Department, air conditioners have been installed at Nishuane,” Ponds continued. “At Glenfield, air conditioners are being installed in some rooms before the end of the school year.”
“Please know that with our Community Investment/Bond Referendum, air conditioning is included at all schools,” Ponds added.
