Hundreds Gather In Montclair For Joint Jewish, Palestinian Fundraiser

"As a Jewish community, we came together to celebrate our hope for a future of dignity, safety and peace for both Jews and Palestinians."

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Hundreds of people showed up to support Israeli hostages and humanitarian aid for Gaza at a fundraising concert in Montclair last weekend.

More than 300 people gathered for an outdoor concert celebrating the Jewish festival of Lag BaOmer on Saturday. The event raised funds for both the Hostage and Missing Families Forum and the New Israel Fund’s food relief efforts through World Central Kitchen and the International Rescue Committee in Gaza.

Israeli surf band Habbina Habbina, guest singer Gili Yalo, a bonfire and food from local restaurant Marcel were among the evening’s festivities.

“As a Jewish community, we came together to celebrate our hope for a future of dignity, safety and peace for both Jews and Palestinians – raising money for the families of Israeli hostages and food relief efforts in Gaza is one way to embody that hope,” Rabbi Elliott Tepperman of Bnai Keshet said.

Tepperman noted that Lag Ba Omer is a break, a day of celebration during a period of semi-mourning.

“This year, it felt especially appropriate to gather with other congregations in a celebration that contributes to efforts to ease suffering on both sides of the Gaza border,” he said.

The Rev. Ann Ralosky also had high praise for the fundraising effort.

“During a time of painful divisions, it was a joy to join with other congregations in celebration of our shared humanity and commitment to justice, peace, and security for all peoples of the Middle East” Ralosky said. “We appreciate this chance to support our Jewish neighbors in this effort.”
