Iconic Sex Therapist ‘Dr. Ruth’ Coming To Montclair State University

Iconic sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer will be appearing at Montclair State University on Wednesday, Nov. 9 to talk about “sex, education and her personal journey” in a special evening event.

Free and open to the public, the program is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the seventh floor Conference Center of Montclair State’s University Hall. A book signing, sponsored by Watchung Booksellers, will follow the program.

“A pioneering voice on sex and sex education, Dr. Ruth rose to national prominence in the 1980’s with her radio talk show Sexually Speaking. The past three decades have seen her become an international celebrity with television programs on Lifetime, PBS and MTV U, and a best-selling author, with all of her 41 books still currently in print.”

Ruth’s special appearance will be an interdisciplinary educational event for Montclair State University students co-sponsored by the institution’s departments of Spanish and Italian; Family and Child Studies; Modern Languages and Literatures; Religion; and Public Health; as well as the First-Year Writing; Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies; and Jewish American Studies programs.

“In her 88 years, Dr. Ruth has seen many changes in the way sexuality is talked about,” said MSU Department of Spanish and Italian Chairperson Raul Galoppe, who translated the play based on her life, “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” into Spanish.

“As a pioneer in the field, she opened the door to healthy discussions of difficult topics,” Galoppe said. “Her visit to Montclair State University is an excellent opportunity for our students and our community to continue this conversation with the legendary radio and TV personality.”
