Is Montclair's Gap Store On The Chopping Block?

Gap Inc. announced it will close 189 U.S. locations.

With an eye toward more expansion overseas, Gap Inc. has just announced plans to close 189 stores in the United States — of 21 percent of its namesake Gap stores—by the end of 2013.

The retailer also announced plans to triple the number of Gap stores in China from 15 this year to 45 by the end of next year.

The anouncement comes on the heels of a recently stated goal to decrease overall square footage in the United States by 10 percent between 2007 and 2013.

The idea is to double revenue from outside of the United States while focusing less on domestic sales, which have been falling in recent years.

When asked whether this meant the Gap store in Upper Montclair would be closing, Tamara Rosenkranz, a spokeswoman for the chain that also includes Old Navy and Banana Republic, said the company was so far not providing "this level of detail publically."

The Gap at 629 Valley Road has long been a staple in Upper Montclair, along with the likes of Williams-Sonoma and Cold Stone Creamery.

In online reviews, though, shoppers have complained that — while the Gap is a good place to go for a staple — the small store doesn't boast much in the way of selection.
