BRADFORD’S FIRST POP-UP BIKE LANE DEBUTS ON JUNE 7th!
We’re marking Bradford’s last Walk/Bus/Bike to School Day -- Wednesday, June 7 -- with our first-ever pop-up bicycle lane. Never heard of a pop-up bike lane? They’re relatively new in Montclair, with the first lane used on the 2014 International Walk to School Day, for Renaissance Middle School.
Bradford’s pop-up bicycle lane will begin at Mountainside Pool, continue north on Upper Mountain Ave., turn right on Mt. Hebron Road, then cross Mt. Hebron at the College Ave. cross walk. Orange cones will separate the lane from vehicular traffic, with white bicycle stencils identifying the bike lane. We will also have several volunteers wearing reflective vests along the route. The lane will be open from 8:15 to 8:45.
Each child must wear a bike helmet; while it is legal for adults to forego a helmet, the Montclair Police Department strongly urges adults using the lane to wear helmets.
Officer Russo from the Montclair Police Department will be stationed at the bike lane, to help control traffic and guide cyclists. Lieutenant Stephanie Egnezzo of the MPD helps make pop-up bicycle lanes possible by advising school volunteers how to make these lanes possible and also by applying regularly for grants needed to fund special MPD details, like the Bradford pop-up lane. The MPD will staff a table at Bradford’s entrance, to distribute road safety information for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists and fun, eye-catching (in a good way) gadgets like blinking clip-on reflectors.
Other volunteers from Bike Walk Montclair will paint the bike lane symbols early on June 7. Bike Walk Montclair is a local, nonprofit organization that promotes safe biking and walking, and they actively support schools -- like Bradford -- in setting up pop-up bike lanes. Their enthusiasm and experience have been instrumental in making Bradford’s lane possible.
