Update: Montclair Lantern Festival For AAPI Heritage Month Postponed

A group representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Montclair will light up Edgemont Park with thousands of lanterns.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — UPDATE: The event scheduled for May 21 has been canceled due to the weather forecast. It will not take place on the original rain date due to a heat advisory. A new date will be announced, organizers said. Our original article follows below.

For the second year in a row, a group representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in Montclair will light up Edgemont Park with thousands of lanterns.

According to a news release from organizers, AAPI Montclair will illuminate the park with thousands of lanterns to remember those killed and harmed by racialized violence and injustice – including anti-Asian hate – on Friday, May 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. A rain date is slated for Saturday, May 21.

Organizers said:

“We stand together against all forms of hate and celebrate community and solidarity, and our shared goals of securing justice for all. We are looking forward to building off of the inaugural festival to develop a deeper connection with the community, filled with live musical performances, special guests, family-friendly activities, food trucks and the opportunity for participants to dedicate lanterns with special names or messages.”

Admission is free, with donations accepted at http://givebutter.com/lanternfest2022. More details will be posted on https://aapimontclair.org.

AAPI Montclair is a grassroots organization of more than 600 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the Montclair area.
