MHS Student Aims High As He Holds Fundraisers And Makes Music

Montclair High School student Malcolm "Thelonious" Martin has already gone far in the music world.

Hosting a school wide fundraiser, participating in a 12-week music program at New York University, and having an album on iTunes is definitely something to be proud of— especially if you are only a senior in high school. Montclair High School student Malcolm "Thelonious" Martin has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. Indeed, Thelonious has been producing music since May 2008 and his passion for it has only escalated from there.

What started out as rapping with some friends has become a symphony of beats and great music available to the general public. But his inspiration isn't just music: "I get inspired by other forms of art and cultures," he says. "I like watching films and wondering how would it sound if I did the score or what can I create to draw inspiration  in someone else."

With three albums under his belt (Fear of Flight, 1UP, and Dusty Cartridges), Thelonious is well on his way to becoming a music icon. His love for music has inspired him to share it with the rest of MHS and the Montclair community. Thelonious and MHS graduate Dillon Rand put on the Second Annual Rockin' the Suburbs concert in the spring. The lineup included local bands and many groups performed as well as Grammy-nominated artist Maiysha. With the money earned, they hope to establish a Rockin' the Suburbs club and have a studio built in MHS so other artists at MHS have a chance to show off their talents.

Thelonious has also earned the privilege to be a part of the Future Music Mogul program at New York University. He got himself into the program by writing an essay, putting together a resume, and acing an interview. He surely is not shy with getting his name out there. He has been self promoting himself through his Twitter account and his music streaming website theloniousmartin.bandcamp.com where he networks with other producers and artists.

Thelonious does not plan to stop until he is nominated or wins a Grammy. "Most importantly I just want to be happy and music makes me happy so I continue to do so," he says. "So far it's taking me on the right path so I won't slow down." His passion, drive, and focus will hopefully get him far in the industry. His album 1UP is available on iTunes and at theloniousmartin.bandcamp.com. You can also follow him on Twitter at Thelonious1up.
