Montclair Band Named To Spin's 'Best Songs of 2015' List

LISTEN: Montclair's own suburban rockers, Pinegrove, play "New Friends."

One of Montclair’s many rising bands has been named to Spin’s “101 Best Songs of 2015” list.

Pinegrove, a Montclair-based suburban rock group, describes itself as a five-piece band that is hard at work with their “introspective partying.”

The band’s members - Evan Stephens Hall, Nick and Zack Levine, Adan Feliciano and Nandi Plunkett – state that their influences include Half Waif, Gifts, Tawny Peaks, Alex G, Frankie Cosmos, LAKE, Mount Eerie, Pile, Bon Iver, Porches and Gillian Welch.

Spin – which named the band’s song “New Friends” to the #100 slot in its list – had this to say about the group:

“Montclair’s Pinegrove aren’t too far removed from their suburban adolescence, so when frontman Evan Stephens Hall sings of growing up and slowly shedding all of his old pals, the wounds still feel fresh and open. But consider ‘New Friends’ a hopeful salve — over a dizzy guitar line and the whinny of a distant banjo, Hall offers cautious optimism: lose all your old friends? Go ahead and make new ones.”

The band responded to the nomination with a Facebook post on Monday:

“Can’t help but feel excited about our placement: the number 100 is welcoming and formidable; square, round, even; the sum of the first nine prime numbers; the approximate mph of a sneeze.”
