The recently launched Montclair Black Coalition (MBC) has launched a Black History Month Poster Competition. The competition is open to all 5th through 12th grade students that are attending a Montclair school and college students attending a surrounding college. Submissions will be accepted until Friday, January 27 (originally, Friday, January 20). The winners will be announced on Saturday, February 4. The winning artworks will be displayed in storefronts of local businesses during February and March 2023. Interested students can visit https://tinyurl.com/2023MBCpostercontest for more information and to enter the contest.
Through research and creativity, students will commemorate Black History Month and learn about the people and critical historical moments, where little may be known. The contest’s theme is Unsung Heroes and Moments in History. “Art is a powerful way to tell a story and explore various topics,” states Kay Richards, founder of Montclair Black Coalition. Two student winners at each grade level - elementary, middle, high school and college will be awarded. “It’s important to share the rich culture and significance of black history throughout Montclair,” adds Montclair Black Coalition board member, Denise Ford Sawadogo.
