Montclair, Bloomfield Residents Cheer for Women's Team

Watching the women's world cup final at the Town Pub on Broad Street.

Even though the Women’s US soccer team fell short of winning their third World Cup in an amazing game on Sunday, ending in penalties 3-1, Bloomfield residents rooted on their country’s team at theTown Pub on Broad Street.

“I only watched the last few games,” said Greg Cvetovich, Scotch Plains, as he sat with Bloomfield local Mike Fiorito and John Garone, of Montclair, at the bar. “But it would be great if they won.”

Whether they were big soccer fans or just watched the last few games, almost every television in the bar was showing the final with eyes fixed on all them. Jeers or cheers followed each close goal or each close save.

“I’ve been trying to follow the game but my tables keep me busy,” said Town Pub’s waitress, Mary-Ann Zarcone of Bloomfield. “My eyes are glued as much as I can.”

Fiorito and his father-in-law, Garone, commented in between fits of near celebration how one-sided the match was.

“The last game the US was out-played by France but they came off,” said Garone. “They have already out played Japan. They should be up four or five goals."

Zarcone also commented, “They have had almost 12 shots but just haven’t made it in.”

Fiorito, although rooting for the US, also said, “even though it would be great to win it is hard to root against Japan after everything that happened this year. They could use it.”
