Montclair Cancer Survivor Now Mentors At Clara Maass Hospital
Cheryl Young says she doesn't have all the answers to life. But one thing is certain: she can enjoy the journey.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Montclair resident and cancer survivor Cheryl Young says she doesn’t have all the answers. The path ahead may not always be clear. But one thing is certain: she can enjoy the journey.
Young recently received an official proclamation from Montclair Township in recognition of her work as a volunteer mentor for patients in treatment for cancer at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.
Young was expected to receive the proclamation at a Montclair Town Council meeting in March. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her recognition was delivered to her home.

The Montclairite’s challenge with cancer demonstrates how she brings a special understanding to those suffering from cancer.
“Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with lung cancer (right lung which was removed),” Young recalled. “Eighteen months thereafter, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (right side lumpectomy) in December 2012. [I was] considered a high risk for ovarian cancer (I required a hysterectomy), and was diagnosed again on Jan. 30, 2013 with lung cancer in the left lung, leaving me with three-fourths of a regular lung.”

“Based on my history with lung cancer, COPD Stage 3 and at the recommendations of all the specialists that are part of my health team, I am sheltering in place relentlessly,” Young recently said. “Having dealt with many forms of cancer means that I must be focused on self-care and compassion for other patients battling health challenges like cancer.”
“My faith and belief is something bigger than myself,” Young said. “I also have an inner knowledge that there is a plan for my life that gives me the will to live. I do not have all the answers, my path may not always be clear, but I can enjoy the journey. With God, all things are possible. I hold this truth in my mind and in my heart.”
