Montclair, NJ – Montclair’s Catholic population may soon see a big change in the town’s houses of worship.

On Tuesday evening, the leaders of two of Montclair’s Roman Catholic churches - the Chuch of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel – announced that the Archdiocese of Newark has instructed them to merge.

The proposed plan is for the consolidation of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel into the Church of the Immaculate Conception, TAP Into Montclair reported.

Immaculate Conception staff told TAP Into that the coming merger will not affect its Catholic School.

Montclair also has another church under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Newark, St. Peter Claver on Elmwood Avenue.

In addition, there is another Roman Catholic Church, St. Cassian, which is located on Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair.
