Montclair Council Votes On 2025 Town Budget (See Latest Update)

The town's latest spending plan survived a council vote in Montclair.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Town Council gave a thumbs-up to the 2025 municipal budget at their meeting this week.

The council voted unanimously to approve the town’s latest spending plan on Tuesday. It authorizes the appropriation of $62.59 million for municipal purposes, $3.88 million for library purposes and $7.74 million for school debt service purposes in Type I school district to be raised by taxation.

The spending plan was introduced at the town council meeting on May 6. Township manager Stephen Marks and chief financial officer Padmaja Rao said the budget would include a 1.98 percent tax rate increase. A home valued at $639,630 would see an increase of $107 to the municipal portion of its property taxes, administrators said.

The council held two additional meetings for department heads to present additional details about their respective budgets on May 17 and May 28. Watch video footage from the hearings below.

Property taxes in New Jersey are mainly made up of three parts: school, municipal and county. Last year, the average Montclair resident paid $21,631 in property taxes on a home valued at $635,770 (not including credits and deductions).
