Montclair Extends Moratorium On Demolishing Local Homes

Montclair will extend a temporary moratorium on demolition permits for another 30 days, officials said.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair will extend a temporary moratorium on demolition permits in the township for another 30 days, officials announced Friday.

Acting Township Manager Timothy Stafford issued the following statement about the moratorium extension on March 15:

“Given that it is in the township's best interest to continue to temporarily halt granting new demolition permits for all structurally sound 1-, 2-, 3- and 4- family buildings or structures throughout the township until the governing body can consider any amendments to the township code, pursuant to the authority vested in me by law, I hereby order and direct that the moratorium on the issuance of all new demolition permits for 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-family buildings or structures be extended for 30 days. This moratorium does not apply to any application to demolish any 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-family building or structure deemed unfit for occupancy by the construction official or 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-family building or structure that is in immediate danger of collapse.”

The administrative order takes effect immediately, Stafford said Friday.

Montclair officials initially issued the ban on demolition permits on Feb. 15 after a local mansion dating from the Civil War at 14 Undercliff Road and a second historic home at 172 Lloyd Road were knocked down last week. Both properties were purchased by 14 Undercliff LLC last year, NorthJersey.com reported.
