Montclair Firefighter Hurt Battling Blaze; Resident Evacuates

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A Montclair firefighter was injured battling a home blaze on Tuesday. The resident self-evacuated before crews arrived, authorities said.

The Montclair Fire Department got a call about a fire at an Elizabeth Road home at 3:56 p.m., fire officials said.

Here’s what happened when firefighters arrived, officials said:

“The fire was initially located in the basement, but had made its way into the walls of the house and spread to the 1st and 2nd floors. MFD units stretched multiple hose lines and quickly extinguished the fire. There was heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the basement, 1st and 2nd floors.”

A firefighter was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. He was later released. There were no reported civilian injuries, officials said.

Authorities said a unit from Clifton helped bring the fire under control, and crews from East Orange, West Orange and Bloomfield covered the township for the duration of the incident. The last unit cleared the scene at 6:28 p.m.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, authorities said.
