Montclair Hospital Gets Top Marks In Latest Leapfrog Grade

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A hospital in Montclair is among a slew of medical centers in New Jersey that received the highest rating from a watchdog agency as part of its twice-yearly “safety grades.”

On Wednesday, Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair received an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent health care nonprofit. See the full rating broken down by category here.

The Leapfrog Group uses an academic grading scale with five letter grades to score nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide on more than 30 measures of patient safety. Leapfrog says its hospital rating system is the only one in the country focusing solely on a hospital’s ability to protect patients from preventable errors. Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair nailed down an “A” grade for Spring 2023. It’s an improvement from Fall 2022, when the hospital got a “C” grade from Leapfrog.

• Fall 2020 – B
• Spring 2020 – B

“The past few years have been a challenge, but Mountainside Medical Center never wavered in our commitment to providing safe patient care,” said Tim O’Brien, chief executive officer.

“I am proud of the Mountainside team, who understand and work hard to implement patient-first practices,” O’Brien added.
