Montclair Library To Host Exhibit By Artists From Taiwan

The Montclair Public Library’s popular art series continues with the “Encounters, 2020” on view in the Montclair Public Library Gallery, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, during library hours from Jan. 2 to Jan. 30.

An art reception is scheduled in the gallery for the artists on Jan. 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. Four women printmakers, Debbie Lee, Hyun-Jin Kim, Yu-Fang Liu, and Meng-Ling Liao will join together to exhibit their respective works. “Encounters, 2020” feature prints by artists from Taiwan who in their distinct ways explore the limits of printmaking as personal artistic expression. Their styles are original and captivating, and their explorations provoke reflection. These artists have exhibited widely in Asia and each with numerous international awards.

Among them, Debbie Lee is interested in the environment as fragments and memories. Her works combines drypoint, intaglio and paper pulp. Segmented lines and disjointed shapes are the subject matter. Through the man-made surfaces, such as roads and settlements, and valleys and rivers found in nature, she expresses her feelings about changes and separations in the story of the land.

Hyun-Jin Kim’s series is inspired from the Bible Psalms. Come, Press the "Pause" is the key to enjoying a moment of peace, and enjoying the beauty of life. The theme is expressed with imaginative storylines, with faded marks and subtle colors. The timeworn time presence is further enhanced by use of recycled tea bag wrappings. Her prints are full of contemplation for life’s course.

Yu-fang Liu’s work echoes the feeling of life, showing the tenderness of emotion. Her landscape series is reminiscent of Eastern indoor ornamentation or the elegance of an outdoor garden. She masterfully uses the technique of wood lithography to create delicate marks with plywood grains in relaxed pale color tones.

Meng-Ling Liao’s brisk forms, interwoven with the child-like imageries in space, conjures up a series of uncompromising visual prose. Incorporated with wood blocks of trees, animals, houses, are the earth tones of rock forms in intaglio. Inspired by her young daughter, she resolves challenges of different roles in life, as the juxtaposition becomes joyful, and full of energy.
