MONTCLAIR, NJ — After some back-and-forth about the numbers, Montclair officials have come to an agreement about funding for the local public library.

Mayor Sean Spiller announced Monday evening that the Montclair Public Library will be “fully funded” in the 2022 budget.

“As we proceed through the budget process, I’m pleased to announce that through collaboration with Library Director Janet Torsney, Board President JoAnn McCullough and the library board, we have been able to craft a budget proposal that meets the library's full request of $500,000 in discretionary funding above the mandated appropriation of $2,887,767,” Spiller said.

“The Montclair ideal means ensuring all Montclair residents have access to high-quality services while maintaining financial sustainability. I am grateful for the efforts of our interim library director and the board. Working together, we are making progress and will continue to make so much more.”

Torsney said that working together with Mayor Spiller and in partnership with the council, library administrators have developed a budget “we can be proud of in an extraordinarily difficult time for municipalities and libraries across the state.”

“This budget will allow us to continue to serve the residents of Montclair with high-quality facilities and resources,” Torsney said.
