Montclair Makos Continue Momentum with Breakthrough 12U Tournament Weekend

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Team growth was on full display at the American Water Polo 12U Tournament on April 18, where the Makos delivered a standout weekend performance. Competing against strong regional opponents, the team secured impressive wins over SFY Tsunami and Perkiomen Valley Water Polo, showcasing both offensive creativity and disciplined defensive play.What stood out most wasn’t just the results, but how the team achieved them. “The Makos played with growing confidence and cohesion, demonstrating sharper decision-making, improved spacing, and a willingness to trust one another in key moments,” said Chris Kelsch, head coach of the Makos. “Quick transitions, unselfish passing, and relentless defensive pressure defined their play throughout the weekend.”The competition itself also highlighted something bigger. Facing new teams like SFY Tsunami, the Makos saw firsthand the continued growth of youth water polo across the New York metro area. “They put up a great fight,” said Khara Kelsch, team manager of the Makos. “We are excited to see new teams like this emerging, reflecting strong growth and momentum in youth water polo in the Northeast. More teams, more competition, and more opportunities for these athletes to grow. It’s great for everyone involved.”Beyond the wins, the weekend reinforced the team’s continued development and growing identity. The Makos are establishing themselves as a cohesive, competitive unit, balancing intensity with composure and showing a deeper understanding of the game. As the season continues, the Makos are not only gaining experience; they’re building momentum. With continued focus and development, this is a team clearly on the rise!Looking ahead, the Makos will be hosting a summer water polo clinic for new players. The program will give kids ages 9–12 an opportunity to try water polo for the first time and build foundational skills in preparation for potential participation in the fall competitive season.
