Montclair Native, Kids Killed In Tragic Crash On I-81

The Montclair native's car struck a deer, then got rear-ended by another vehicle and pushed into a median, police say.

A Montclair native and her two teenage children died in a tragic crash on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania on Monday morning.

Renae Gilliam was a Montclair High School graduate and worked for the City of East Orange before moving to Georgia, and was back in New Jersey to visit family, TAP Into Montclair reported.

According to Pennsylvania state police, the fatal crash took place around 5:17 a.m. in Guilford Township, when Gilliam’s Nissan Sentra - traveling southbound in the left lane - struck a deer and became disabled.

At that time, a 31-year-old Chambersburg man in a Chevy Trailblazer who “didn’t see the disabled vehicle” rear-ended the Nissan, police stated.

The impact of the crash pushed the Nissan into a median where it burst into flames, police said.

All of the occupants of the car died, and the driver of the Chevy was taken to Chambersburg hospital via ambulance with moderate injuries, police stated.

The crash is under investigation, authorities said.
