Montclair Obitutary: William Lawrence

The longtime Montclair resident was active at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and volunteered at Toni's Kitchen.

Longtime Montclair resident William Lawrence passed away on Sept. 7.

He was 90-years-old.

“William Walker Lawrence of West Caldwell died Monday morning at the age of 90.

“He was a long time resident of Montclair and a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Born in Glen Ridge, he was a graduate of Glen Ridge class of ‘43 and Cornell University class of ‘46, serving in the Navy through ‘48.

“He joined Batton Barton Dursten and Osborn advertising where he worked for 20 years. He left the world of advertising to work with the National Development Council, a not-for-profit organization focusing on redevelopment of inner cities with housing and opportunities for small businesses.

“Retiring in 2005, he enjoyed traveling with family and friends and loved opera, classical and country music. He was active at St. Luke’s leading the youth group, volunteering at Toni’s Kitchen, and serving on the vestry.

“He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Lois Bowen Lawrence, and his children Pamela Bowen Lawrence of Silver Spring, Md, William Walker Lawrence Jr. and his wife Denise Ward Lawrence of Boulder, Co., and David Bowen Lawrence of Montclair. He gloried in his grandchildren, Ryan, Miranda, Emily, Fiona, Isabel, Dylan and Julia and great grandson Dominic. He also enjoyed the company of his nieces, a nephew and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

“In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Montclair, NJ, or to Toni’s Kitchen (online at tk.slechurch.org or by sending a check to St. Luke’s church with Toni’s Kitchen in the memo line), or to the charity or your choice.”
