Montclair Rugby Defeats Bayonne in 2017 Fall Season Opener 9-9-17
The Montclair Men's Rugby Football Club started its Division 2 fall league season off on Saturday with a hard-fought 42-29 victory over the Bayonne Bombers. Justin Bruso won man of the match honors from his Outside Center position with a strong game both offensively and defensively.
Bayonne jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Milan Orlovic scored his first try as a Norseman. He struck again after Bruso broke through the Bayonne defense and floated a beautifully weighted pass back inside for a streaking Orlovic to score uncontested. Montclair finished the first-half ahead 21-15 after Michael Bannon dotted down a grubber kick by Daniel Zielke in the try zone.
The teams continued to trade tries in the second half as Bruso and Peter Driscoll scored to keep the Norseman ahead. A late try by Harold Vazquez iced the game for Montclair after he chased down his own kick ahead following an errant Bayonne pass and out ran the defense. Vazquez was the leading scorer for the Norseman with 17 points as he finished the day kicking all six try conversions perfectly. Special recognition goes to Montclair’s forwards who dominated the set plays and provided a strong attacking platform throughout the match.
