Montclair Schools May Remove Some Holidays From Upcoming Calendar
Diwali, the Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr and the second day of Rosh Hashana may be removed from the 2025-2026 school calendar in Montclair.
MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Public School District may remove several holidays from its upcoming calendar under a new proposal.
School officials said the district may only give students and staff off for federal holidays in the 2025-2026 academic year because of non-federal holidays falling on weekdays. The proposal would eliminate Diwali, the Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr and the second day of Rosh Hashana as days off, Montclair Local reported.
District officials are seeking feedback from the school community about the proposed changes. Comments should be sent to calendarinput@montclair.l12.nj.us by March 1.

“Your input is important to us as we finalize the calendar for the next school year and plan for a year that best supports the needs of our students, families and staff,” interim superintendent Damen Cooper wrote in a message to the community.
Several people commented on the proposed changes at the board’s Feb. 19 meeting. Watch the video here.
