At Montclair State University, Intellectual Property Expert from NJ-based Gearhart Law to Moderate Panel Discussion on Strategic Domain Name Usage

"Demystifying Domain Names: Using Domain Names as a Marketing, Business & Intellectual Property Tool"- Jan. 27 at MSU School of Business

Summit, New Jersey-- On January 27th at Montclair State University’s (MSU) School of Business, David Postolski, a registered patent and intellectual property attorney at Summit, NJ-based Gearhart Law, will deliver a short address about “Demystifying Domain Names:  Using Domain Names as  Marketing Tool” and moderate a panel discussion with numerous experts in this field.  The event, co-sponsored by Montclair State’s Resident Life, will be held ion the MSU University Hall Conference Center (7th floor) from 6:00 to 8:30pm. 

The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently expanded the available generic top-level domains, which are the letters immediately following the final dot in an Internet address.  This is the largest-ever expansion of the domain name system.  The goal is to enhance competition, innovation and consumer choice as entities can apply to operate a top-level domain registry.  In essence, each operator becomes the custodian of a piece of the Internet’s core infrastructure.

  • How to use domain names as a marketing, business and IP tool
  • How domain name expansion will impact startups and small businesses
  • How to protect your brand and/or trademark amidst a flurry of new top-level domains
  • Costs in becoming registrar of a domain
  • What to do if your domain name is being held hostage for a large sum of money

David Postolski, the moderator of the event, is a registered patent attorney and intellectual Property attorney at Gearhart Law.  With over 15 years’ experience, Mr. Postolski specializes in assisting inventors, creators, artists, startups, entrepreneurs, early stage companies and emerging companies with their U.S. and International intellectual property strategy, protection, enforcement and monetization.  David remains very involved in the creation of New York State’s first federally approved patent pro bono program in conjunction with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.  He is a frequent speaker and author on IP issues surrounding raising capital, business formation, licensing, and reward and equity base crowd funding.

“Many startups dream of seeing their small business on the Internet, but are not sure how to go about using domain names to their best advantage,” said M r. Mr. Postolski is also a Professor at Parsons School of Design where he teaches master level students about IP, ethics and other regulatory considerations in starting business ventures and products around design.  David is the current Vice Chair of the Professional Issues Division of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law as well as a member of the CLE Board, Membership Board, Founder of the International Action Group and the Sponsorship Committee.
