MONTCLAIR, NJ — Here’s something that’s likely not a surprise to many Montclair residents – the town loves its coffee, according to a recent study.
A study from Zoma Sleep, which creates mattresses and other sleep products, used the Yelp API to collate data on the number of coffee shops in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the U.S., including Montclair. The data was then cross-referenced with population totals from each municipality.
The result? A list of the nation’s “most coffee-obsessed towns,” based on the number of coffee shops per person.

In New Jersey, Montclair was right at the top of the list with 26 coffee shops for a population of 38,509 residents – a ratio that put it just above the second-most coffee-crazed place, Hoboken.
Zoma called San Francisco "America's most awake city," with "528 dedicated coffee outlets serving a population of 866,606. That equates to one coffee shop for every 1,641 people in the city — the highest ratio out of America's 100 most populated cities." Portland, Honolulu, and Seattle were also near the top.
