Montclair Voter Guide For 2022 Primary Election: What To Know

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The mid-term election is heating up in New Jersey, including Montclair.

On Tuesday, June 7, Montclair residents will head to the polls to vote in the 2022 primary election. The winners will secure their party's nomination for the general election, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE

In Montclair, voters will get to cast ballots for Essex County executive. Both candidates are running unopposed; Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. for the Democratic Party, and Adam Kraemer for the Republican Party.

U.S. CONGRESS

Montclair voters will also get to cast a ballot for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The township is split between two Congressional districts, which are represented by two Democrats: Donald Payne Jr. in the 10th and Mikie Sherrill in the 11th.

In the 10th district, Payne faces a challenge for the Democratic nod from Imani Oakley, who is running under the slogan, “Democrats for Change,” and Akil Khalfani, who is running under the slogan, “Pride. Progress. New Jersey.”

David Pinckney, who has the “Essex County Republican Party Organization, Inc.” line, will face a challenge for the Republican nomination from self-described "political outsider" Garth Stewart. Read More: NJ-10 Congress Race (What To Know For 2022 Primary Election)

In the 11th district, Sherrill is running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination. Meanwhile, after emerging from a crowded field of hopefuls over the past year, there are now five Republican candidates on the ballot in the 11th district. They include:

• Tayfun Selen – “Essex County Republican Party Organization, Inc.”
• Paul DeGroot – “A Republican Fighter Who Can Win”
• Alexander R. Halter – “Halter For America!”
• Toby Anderson – “America First Veteran”
• Ruth McAndrew – “#Nurse #Farmer #Notapolitician”

ELECTION INFO, DATES

Voters can turn in ballots one of three ways:

VOTE EARLY – Early-voting locations will become available in all New Jersey counties from Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. No appointment is necessary. Learn more about early voting in the state here.

VOTE BY MAIL – Registered voters can apply for a vote-by-mail ballot by following the instructions found at vote.nj.gov or contacting their county clerk. Ballots must be postmarked on or before 8 p.m. on Election Day, and must be received by their county's Board of Elections on or before the sixth day after the close of the polls. Voters can also place their vote-by-mail ballot in one of their county's secure ballot drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Drop box locations can be seen online here.

VOTE IN PERSON ON ELECTION DAY - Polls will be open for in-person voting from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7. Find your local polling place here.

Here are some important dates and times for those casting ballots in this year's primary election:

• May 17 – This was the last day residents could register to vote in the 2022 New Jersey primary.
• May 31 – This was the last day residents could apply for a Mail-In Ballot.
• June 2 – This is the last day for applications to receive primary election mail-in ballots by electronic means for qualified overseas civilian and military voters.
• June 3 through June 5 – This is the in-person early voting period for the Primary Election.
• June 6 (by 3 p.m.) – This is the deadline for in-person mail-in ballot applications for the Primary Election.
• June 7 – Voters head to the polls to cast their ballots.
