Mountainside Medical Center to hold breast health update for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Health Mountainside Medical Center joins the effort to raise awareness by holding a free Breast Health update on October 18 from 6 - 7 PM.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center will be joining the effort to raise awareness by holding a free Breast Health update on October 18 from 6 -7 p.m. at 1 Bay Avenue in Montclair. Please call 1-800-973-4674 or visit mountainsidehosp.com/events to register. Presented by Michelle O'Shea, M.D., breast surgeon with Mountainside Medical Group and Mountainside Medical Center, the workshop will highlight the latest treatment options for women and men.

Risk factors for developing breast cancer are age, family history, and being overweight. About one in eight women will be impacted by breast cancer in her lifetime, and more than 50 percent of women will experience breast lumps. While every lump requires investigation, more than 80 percent are diagnosed as benign and noncancerous. Sophisticated diagnostic tools can detect asymptomatic breast cancer in its earliest stages. The survival rate for patients with early stage breast cancer exceeds 90 percent.

“Early detection, including doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms can help ensure the best possible outcomes,” states Dr. O'Shea. “As a full-service hospital, we have immediate access to the complete continuum of skilled care whenever the treatment of breast cancer or other diseases of the breast is indicated.”

About five percent to ten percent of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary. Genetic testing and counseling are offered for those who may be at risk due to family history, and the program’s compassionate, skilled specialists will help those at high risk make informed choices and take proactive, preventive steps.
