Montclair Sports Wrap! Player of Week!

A summary of all the great sports going on in Montclair

The Montclair football team kept on chugging through its schedule with a 50-14 victory at home last weekend over Irvington.

There was no let down for the Mounties, who smashed past Seton Hall Prep, 42-14, the previous weekend. Montclair raised its record to 4-0.

Montclair quarterback Khalif Herbin hit Darrin Davis open in the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown strike to give the Mounties a 37-14 lead half time. Herbin passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for three more in the victory. He compiled a total of 335 yards of offense on the ground and through the air.

Montclair has a bye this week before hosting Belleville on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.

In addition, Montclair Kimberley made a big comeback to tie the game at 21 with Cedar Grove on Friday night but Panthers Joe Balestrieri scored on a 35-yard touchdown run to ruin the Cougars drive for the win. MKA would fall 29-21. Cougars quarterback Gabe DiMasi hit Max Herrmann on a 26-yard touchdown strike to tie the game. DiMasi would throw for two touchdowns while Power Lawrence would rumble 93 yards for the other score. The Cougars dropped to 3-1. Cougars will host Glen Ridge on Saturday (2 p.m.)

Girls soccer

Montclair raised its record to 7-0-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Millburn at home on Saturday afternoon. The Mounties got all the goals they need as it turned out as Kiah Atkinson scored 13 minutes into the game. Angel Hart and Lindsey Ewertsen notched a goal each in the Super Essex Conference American division victory.

Montclair goalie Sophia Lattanzio made four saves to preserve the victory.

Down 1-0 in the first half, MKA's Kim Kirnan picked it up with three goals to sink Mt. St. Dominic on Friday in Caldwell. Lady Cougars Emma Layton was stellar in goal with 20 saves. MKA raised its record to 3-4-1 in 2011.

Boys soccer

Montclair Kimberley stayed undefeated on the season as the Cougars ripped Newark Academy, 5-0, in Montclair on Friday.

The MKA goal keeping duo of Matt Lane and David Kauffman combined for four saves and push the Cougars record to 8-0-1. Stephen Piela and Sam Eisen notched two goals each in the SEC victory.

Montclair and West Essex went toe-to-toe on Friday in North Caldwell before senior Bryan McGuinness smacked a shot by West Essex keeper David Grecezek. For the Mounties senior keeper Dan Cartwright made four saves to preserve the shutout and raised their record to 6-3.

Player of the Week

Sophia Lattanzio - The sophomore goal keeper has filled in on a major way after the team's starting goalie Sarah Siwinski had season-ending injury in the second game of the season, a 0-0 tie with Livingston. Lattanzio has stepped in and helped lead the team to a 7-0-1 record this season. The sophomore has only given up one goal (to Nutley) in the seven plus games and registered six shutouts. “She has really come through when we needed her,” said Montclair head coach Chris Johnson.
