New LGBTQ Advocacy Group Launches In Montclair

The Pride Center of Montclair is a separate group from Out Montclair, which recently announced some big organizational changes.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A new LGBTQ advocacy group has launched in town: the Pride Center of Montclair.

The group announced its formation this week, releasing the following statement about its mission:

“The Pride Center of Montclair envisions a thriving, inclusive community where all LGBTQIA2S+ individuals are empowered, celebrated, and have equitable access to opportunities. We aim to be the premier resource hub fostering a society where diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, ability, and age is embraced and valued.”

Organizers said the Pride Center of Montclair will provide resources such as mental health support, medical and legal assistance, interfaith connections and social programming for all ages.

The Pride Center of Montclair’s launch came the week after Out Montclair – the nonprofit that organizes the popular annual Montclair Pride festival – released a statement about several “changes and challenges” its members are making. The two groups are now operating as separate entities in Montclair.

PRIDE CENTER OF MONTCLAIR

Marie Cottrell, founder and executive director at the Pride Center of Montclair, said it will be a “gathering place” and a “sanctuary” in a time when diversity and inclusion are being threatened.

“We are creating a space where LGBTQIA2S+ individuals feel safe, supported, and celebrated. Montclair has long been a place of progress and acceptance, and the Pride Center of Montclair will ensure that legacy continues by providing critical resources, programming and a welcoming home for all who walk through our doors,” Cottrell said.

The Pride Center will be kicking off its launch with two events:

Bingo with Mimi Sashimi – Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Just Jakes

TRANScending Stories: Celebrating the Works of Trans Authors – Friday, March 28, 2025

In partnership with EdgeNJ and Garden State Equality, Pride Center of Montclair presents “TRANScending Stories - Celebrating the Works of Trans Authors”. This powerful celebration of the creativity and voices of trans authors, held in honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility, is a first-of-its-kind event to showcase the remarkable contributions of trans writers through storytelling, discussion, and connection.
