NJ Bill Would Make It Easier To Buy A Used Car, GOP Senator Says

Sen. Kristin Corrado, a Republican from NJ-40, says a proposed state law will make purchasing a used vehicle "a less stressful experience."

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A state senator who represents several towns in Essex County is pushing for a proposed law that she says will make it easier for New Jersey residents to buy a used car.

Sen. Kristin Corrado, a Republican lawmaker who represents the state’s 40th District, is a primary sponsor of S-2736, along with Sen. Vin Gopal of the 11th District, a Democrat.

The bill passed a unanimous vote from the Senate Transportation Committee on Sept. 29, and was referred to Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. Read its full text here.

“If an individual in New Jersey would like to purchase a used car from a private party, that individual should be afforded the same benefits he or she would receive from a dealer if they were buying a new car,” Corrado explained last week.

“Currently, New Jersey’s e-titling system does not include used vehicle sales documents or private motor vehicle sales documents,” Corrado said. “My legislation would make the used car buying process far more efficient and enjoyable by requiring the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) to incorporate used vehicle sales documents into an electronic transaction system.”

According to Corrado, here’s what the bill will do if it becomes law:

“S-2736, would require the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to implement an electronic transaction system for used motor vehicles. Current law already requires the NJMVC to implement this system, but for new vehicle transactions only. The legislation would also authorize the NJMVC to use the same electronic transaction system for private motor vehicle sales and transaction documents.”

“During the pandemic, when motor vehicle locations were constantly closing, people who purchased a used vehicle privately could wait days or even weeks to drive that vehicle home,” Corrado said. “This common-sense legislation will benefit all New Jerseyans and make purchasing a used vehicle a less stressful experience.”

The recently redistricted 40th District includes the following municipalities: Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood and Wyckoff in Bergen County; Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, North Caldwell and Verona in Essex County; Hawthorne, Little Falls, Totowa, Wayne and Woodland Park in Passaic County.
