NJ Sorority Donates Clothes, Preps Meals On MLK Day Of Service

New clothes and bedding – and hot meals – were the order of the day at a Martin Luther King Jr. day of service event in Essex County.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, members of the Montclair-based Omicron Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated donated hundreds of bags of new clothing and bedding while preparing a hot meal for residents of The Salvation Army Montclair Citadel.

Serving the local Salvation Army is a longstanding annual MLK Day tradition for the 100-member Montclair chapter, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.

At this year’s MLK Day program, members of the Omicron Xi Omega Chapter Choir performed a medley of traditional freedom songs as sung by participants in the 1960s civil rights movement. Members of the Eta Pi Chapter as well as the Rho Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated were among the community partners and friends who joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapter in serving the Salvation Army residents and supporters.

Since its inception in 1984, the Omicron Xi Omega Chapter has been dedicated to serving the Greater Montclair area year-round with a focus on supporting the unhoused and food-insecure members of the community. The “We Are One” AKA Service Day to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. engaged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters across all regions in uplifting the communities they serve.
