NJ's Deadliest Industries: Feds Release Workplace Fatality List
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its list of the deadliest industries for workers across the nation, including New Jersey.
MONTCLAIR, NJ — The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released its annual list of the deadliest industries for workers across the nation, including New Jersey.
Earlier this week, the BLS published its ranking of “fatal occupational injuries in New Jersey.” The list examines data from 2018, the most recent available. (See the full report)
There were 83 fatal work injuries in the Garden State during 2018. Fatal occupational injuries in the state have ranged from a high of 145 in 1993, to a low of 69 in 2017.

The deadliest industry was “the private construction industry sector,” where 23 people died from workplace injuries, researchers said.

- 32 people died from “transportation incidents”
- 16 people died from “falls, slips and trips”
- 13 people died from “violence and other injuries by persons or animals”
- 12 people died from “exposure to harmful substances or environments”
Men accounted for 93 percent of the work-related fatalities in New Jersey during 2018, similar to national statistics, researchers said.
