Queering the Sciences: Queer Ecologies

Dr. Eben Kirksey, Visiting Professor in the Environment and Humanities at Priceton University,

presents a talk on queer multi-species families from his forthcoming book, Emergent Ecologies. In an

era of global warming, contemporary writing on the environment largely focuses on doomsday

scenarios. Kirksey suggests we reject such apocalyptic thinking and instead find possibilities in the

wreckage of ongoing disasters, as symbiotic associations of opportunistic plants, animals, and microbes

are flourishing on the 'queer' margins. The talk will be followed by a workshop (3-5pm) on multi-

species pedagogy and how to build an inter-disciplinary curriculum at the crossroads of the arts,

sciences, and humanities. This program is presented in collaboration with the Research Academy for

University Learning
