Sports Business Camp Returns For High School Students

Camp designed for those seeking insight into professional sports.

A dream that began years ago in Montclair High School has turned into a career for sports agent Pat Capra. Now Capra is trying to make that dream available to the students of today.

Capra, who represents several NFL players, is running a Sports Business Camp at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center from July 19th to 21st.

"The Sports Business Camp is a reflection of things I wish I knew when I was young," Capra said recently after nailing down a deal between cornerback Walt Harris and the Baltimore Ravens. "It's an opportunity to expose high school students to the jobs that exist in pro sports.

"You can have a fulfilling, exciting job in public relations, finance, marketing and sales, or as a trainer," Capra said. "The sooner you expose these kids to these jobs the more motivated they will become."

Back in his Montclair High School days, Capra dreamed of being a sports broadcaster. He pursued the interest at Ithaca College, and eventually applied for an internship with the Giants. He was one of five people selected, and he owes his selection to the hard work he put into his hobby. "Everything that they needed, I already knew," Capra said.

The next thing he knew, he was on the sidelines for the Super Bowl. That's when he became friendly with the players, and heard them talk about the broken promises their agents had made. Capra volunteered to set up marketing opportunities for the players, and soon he was at the beginning of a sports agenting career.

While working for the New Jersey Nets in the daytime, he built his own business at night. This moonlighting gave him the name of his company, Lunar Sports Group.
Now he want to help others form their own career path. The Sports Business Camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 19th to 21st. The fee is$199. For more information, you can call 973-228-5500.
