Stay Strong: Bone Density Test Is Simple
Dr. Anuj Tolia of Montclair Radiology meets with Montclair Residents at Edgemont Park to discuss DEXA (Bone densitometry test)

Sometimes in life, you really need to know YOUR score. When it comes to your bones, which truly are the very foundation of your very strength, knowing how your bones are faring is a must. In Montclair, Montclair Radiology's Dr. Anuj Tolia shared information with residents who were there to take a healthy bones program, run by Linda Wheeler, who is helping educate residents about improving their balance and healthy bones.
Dr. Tolia told the crowd about the bone density test, called DEXA, which stands for Bone Densitometry Test. This test measures the strength of your bones, and since bones do weaken with age, it's an important thing to have done. Weakening of bones can lead to Osteoporosis, and can be caused by numerous factors including age, health, and other risk factors that may surprise you. Important risk factors include being female (what else is new!); caucasian; having a history of bone fracture; being older; having a small thin frame, a family history of Osteoporosis; having had early Menopause; a low calcium diet; having had your ovaries removed; not getting enough exercise;eating disorders; medications such as steroids or anticonvulsants as well as alcohol or tobacco abuse.
One woman noted her Celiac Disease has impacted her bones, and others nodded when Dr. Tolia spoke about the importance of keeping bones healthy.

As far as the test goes, it is totally painless and non-invasive.The test takes about 10 minutes, and you lay down on a table, without any pain whatsoever.
Your "score" is called a T-score, and your scan will give your doctor the results. To make an appointment (and most insurance covers this) call 973.661.4674 to make an appointment.
