Verona, Montclair First Responders Team Up After ‘Medical Emergency’

Someone suffered a "cardiac-related medical emergency" inside the basement of a building, Verona authorities said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Emergency responders from Verona and Montclair teamed up to extract a person from a building’s basement after a “cardiac-related medical emergency” on Tuesday, authorities said.

According to a statement from the Verona Police Department, the joint effort also involved the Verona Rescue Squad, the Verona Fire Department, the Verona Department of Public Works, the Montclair Fire Department and Atlantic Paramedics.

First responders arrived at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Fairview Avenue around 11:20 a.m. Here’s what happened next, authorities said:

“Due to the patient's location within the basement, extraction through a sidewalk basement vault door was deemed the best course of action. This required a unified and coordinated effort between all agencies at the scene to perform a technical rescue. After extraction, the patient was transported to University Hospital [in Newark] for further care.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient and the patient's family,” Verona police added.
