Wage Rise In Essex County Lags Behind National Average: Report
Essex County residents earn higher wages than the national average, but the growth pace is lagging behind other counties in the U.S.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Wages increased in Essex County from the fourth quarter of 2018 to the fourth quarter of 2019, but the rise lagged behind the national average, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says.
Essex County saw a 2.3 percent increase in wages, which was below the national average of 3.5 percent, the bureau stated in last week’s report. (See chart below)
The average weekly wage in Essex County during the fourth quarter of 2019 was $1,403, the bureau stated. The national average is $1,185.

Among the 15 largest counties in New Jersey, employment was highest in Bergen County, at 457,000, in December 2019. Middlesex had an employment level of 440,400, followed by Essex with 353,000.
