CCM Music Students Get Historic Look at Sound Recording

Curator at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park records professor's performance in wax.

County College of Morris (CCM) received an informative blast from the past on November 13 when guest lecturer Gerald Fabris, museum curator at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, came for a visit. Fabris gave the CCM Music Recording program an overview of the history of audio recording and conducted a session using Edison’s wax cylinder recorder, which dates back to the early 1910s.

A video of Dr. José Beviá, CCM music professor, performing jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea's “Spain” while Fabris makes the recording is attached to this post. A video of student Eric Tarlo performing an original composition "She's Mine" on electric guitar while being recorded is also attached. The videos also provide the opportunity to hear what the actual wax recording sounds like.
