Marching Forward

Women's March of 2017

Why did some locals from Montville support the Millions of people that marched this past weekend?

The simple answer is, to set expectation.

You see, the best time to protect something, or someone, is not after the violation has happened, but before. My children have electronic devices. They are great kids. They mean well. But history, society, and child development shows me that they may need protection from certain online material.

So, do I wait to see if my 8 year old son finds the pornography site on his own? Or my daughter bumps into a 45 year old creep selling himself as a 8 year old girl? Is it at that point that I try to do something?

Not me. I will look at the signs around me. I will pay attention to what experts have to say about how children lose their way on the internet. I will put into place safeguards. I will put into place expectations of behavior. I will work proactively. It won't be perfect. It may not safeguard entirely. But, it's a start.

That is what the Women's March was about.

Many have said, wait, give the administration a chance. I have. I am paying attention to history. To what is being said. What is not being said. To small acts of change that seem insignificant. To experts. To my gut.

In participating in this march, people were not expecting to receive immediate results. They were setting expectations. Setting precedent. Because when human rights are in danger, it never happens overnight. It's a slow grooming and you often don't even know its happening until it does.

So in light of the removal of the Civil Rights, Native American Rights, and Environmental Change pages from the White House web sight, I say the march Saturday was appropriate.

These women marched to set expectations. To start a safeguard. To work proactively. It won't be perfect, and it may not safe guard entirely. But it is a start.
