Lazar Middle School Featured On Emmy Winning Classroom Close-Up, NJ

Watch NJTV on Sunday, June 25, 2017 to see Lazar students in innovative engineering and HIPP Award-winning program STEM PALS.

MONTVILLE, NJ — On Sunday, June 25, 2017, STEM PALS, a Robert R. Lazar Middle School educational program, will air on the Emmy award-winning television show Classroom Close-up NJ. The segment will be broadcast on NJTV (In Montville Township, New Jersey, NJTV is Cablevision’s Channel 8).

STEM PALS, is an innovative educational initiative at Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville Township, New Jersey, and Parsippany’s Intervale Elementary School. STEM PALS unites science, math and mentoring. Developed by seventh grade science teacher Marisa Castronova-Wos, of Lazar, and third grade teacher Jess Shackil, of Intervale, STEM PALS inspires students to excel in science concepts and curriculum by learning from and mentoring each other. STEM PALS brings the third grade classroom into the seventh grade, and the seventh grade mentors into the third grade, through a live remote connection. Together, students in both classes tackle engineering, math and science concepts resulting in experimentation, original research and solutions.

STEM PALS received the New Jersey Education Association’s (NJEA) Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education Award for 2016.

Just over a dozen HIPP Grants are awarded across NJ annually. According to the NJEA website, the Hipp Grant is in place to help educators “Bring creative ideas to life,” and “Promote excellence in education.”

Now taping its twenty-fourth season, the Emmy award-winning Classroom Close-up, NJ is produced by NJEA and NJTV. It highlights innovative and extraordinary educational programs and educators across the state.

NJEA is the state’s largest association of education professionals, representing 200,000 public school teachers, administrators, higher education faculty, education support professionals, retired educators and students preparing to become teachers.

Classroom Close-up, NJ has filmed three times in Montville Township Public Schools during the 2016-2017 academic school year.

The Lazar Middle and Intervale Elementary STEM PALS will be featured on Classroom Close-up, NJ on Sunday, June 25 at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The segment will also air on Sunday, July 2 at 7:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
