Montville Soccer Association Gives Golf a Second Try

Tournament to raise money for new lights.

The Montville Soccer Association is set to host their second annual Golf Classic to help raise money for the club at 11 a.m. on September 16 at the Knoll West Golf and Country Club in Parsippany.

The soccer association plans to raise money with the event to buy lights for their field.

Montville Soccer Association treasurer John Lo Basso said the lights will greatly enhance the field and activities.

"We have this brand new field from only a couple of years ago," Lo Basso said, "but no lights. We want this to be a fundraiser for the organization to get those lights so we can use the fields at night and just offer people more time to use it."

The association has a field on Changebridge Avenue in Montville (their main one that the lights would be for) and also an additional field in Towaco.

The golf classic will follow a similar format to last year's inaugural event. It will consist of the golf portion and a dinner with awards based on the golf outing.

Registration for golf begins at 11 a.m. through 1 p.m. Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. and play will start at 1 p.m.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m. with the awards given out at 6:30 p.m. The whole thing wraps up at 7:30 p.m.

Lo Basso said they chose golf for the event because it's something everyone enjoys.

"It's also easy to run," he said. "Even in this economy people still come out for it."

He also said between the dinner and the golf they expect somewhere between 70- 90 participants.

Registration for the event can be found online and then mailed to Lo Basso. It costs $175 per person to register, but only $75 to attend the dinner only. The registration form can be found

The Montville Soccer Association is a nonprofit organization with over 800 registered players who play year round. Lo Basso said everyone at the organization is getting excited for the golf classic.

"It's funny now that vacations are over everybody wants to sign up," he said. "We have the help of local businesses to thank; we don't have to come up with any of our own money because of donations from people, sponsors, vendors, community. We're expecting a lot of repeat participants from last year, it was a great time. Everyone wants to win the trophy."
