Clips from the band's national championships performance, plus the text message the principal received after they won.
Principal High School Douglas Sanford learned the school's marching band in Annapolis, Md., via a lengthy text message from the band director after they won.
Sanford said the text from band director Ken Korlishin detailed the band's accomplishments and ended with a smiling emoticon:

In addition to giving Montville the highest overall score, judges said Montville had the best visual performance. Judges awarded Montville the Best Visual caption at every competition this year.
"This group of students was champions before we even stepped foot in any competition," Korlishin said at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting in the municipal building, where the band was honored for its Nov. 13 win.

Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried, Mayor Jim Sandham and Board of Education President were among the school and municipal officials who congratulated the band on its achievement.
