Woodmont Science Students Show Off Research

Fifth graders participate in school's first science fair.

From measuring the results of ethylene gas to comparing which chewing gum results in the biggest bubble, fifth grade students at got to experiment with a science project of their choice in preparation for the school's first ever science fair this week.

The fair was held on Wednesday and Thursday in the school gym and student scientists' exhibits were visited by teachers, administrators and their school peers in grades K-4. But several weeks of work went into the projects before they were displayed.

"They had seven weeks and everyone had to submit an idea which had to be approved," said school science teacher Winnie Wess.

Wess said parents helped with the projects and the students were able to fully develop and understand their experiments.

"What this has done is expand their knowledge," she said, adding "They know more about their topics than they ever did."
