BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — The sounds of liberty will again ring through the South Jersey skies as officials are bringing out a historic relic for the "Burlington County Celebrates America Festival" on Sunday.

Along with a full day of activities, the original bell that rang at the Burlington County courthouse in 1776 to welcome the United States independence will be struck again.

"From Bordentown City of Batsto village, Burlington County is full of amazing history, art, and culture, and we are excited to use this moment to showcase the many diverse aspects of Burlington County history and heritage, and the influence we had on the American Revolution," County Commissioner Randy Brolo said.

The bell ringing will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Historic Old Courthouse (120 High St.).

In 1776, the bell was in the county's original courthouse in Burlington City. The municipality served as the seat of the county's government from 1694 until 1793 when Mount Holly took over.

The bell was then moved to the Historic Olde Courthouse in 1796 after it was constructed.

The building is modeled from Congress Hall and Old City Hall in Philadelphia and was constructed by architect Samuel Lewis. It is one of the nation's oldest courthouses still in use.

Residents are encouraged to come out to High Street in Mount Holly from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday to witness re-enactors and take part in interactive displays, activities, live music, food trucks, a beer garden, craft demonstrations, trolley rides and more.

More than 100 organizations and municipalities will be on site, the County said.

Businesses and homes will be participating in a decorating contest, and two collaborative projects that invite guests to participate, including a mural and video message, will be produced.

More information on the celebration is available on the County's website.
