MAPLE SHADE, NJ — A former South Jersey police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said.
Louis J. Baselice, 67, of Maple Shade, was charged with second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Baselice had bought an electric scooter, cell phone, and other things for the girl, authorities said. He also gave her his credit card number so she could use it for food, they said.
Baselice was a police officer with the Haddonfield Police Department and served as a school resource officer from 2005 to 2009, Haddonfield police said in a statement.
"(Baselice) has not served within our department for more than a decade," the Haddonfield department's statement said. "During his time here, the department received no complaints or reports of any wrongdoing."
"The individual has no current connection to the Borough or the Haddonfield Police Department. We support the Prosecutor’s Office and other law enforcement partners in their investigation into this matter," Haddonfield police said.
Officials became aware of a situation involving a minor after it was reported by her acquaintances, authorities said.
Further details about the girl are being withheld to protect her privacy, authorities said.
Baselice was arrested Tuesday at the Maple Shade Police Department and then taken to the Burlington County Jail, authorities said.
Anyone with information about this case or others that may include Baselice is asked to contact the Prosecutor's Office at (609) 265-5035 and ask to speak to a detective.
