WESTAMPTON, NJ — Burlington County held a tribute and vigil on Monday night for those impacted by substance abuse on "International Overdose Awareness Day."
The "Night of Tribute & Support" at the Burlington County Amphitheater included commentary from those affected, music, and the reading of names of those lost to the disease.
"The biggest misconception is that this can't happen to you or your family," Burlington County Commissioner Randy Brolo, liaison to the Burlington County Department of Human Services, told Patch.
The ninth installment of the event also comes after a 2025 that saw the lowest drug-connected deaths recorded so far in a decade, with 61.
Along with county commissioners, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office was also on site to share information about its "Straight to Treatment" program.
Under this initiative, those with substance abuse disorder can surrender illegal drugs and paraphernalia at designated police departments and meet with counselors to receive help.
"Substance use disorder is not a moral failing, and those struggling are not weak. This is a disease, just like any kind of physical ailment," Brolo added. "It requires proper treatment and long-term recovery."
The"Burlington County Hope One Mobile Outreach Unit" and "Hope One for Youth Van"were also available to guests on Monday night.
Beginning in 2019, the Hope One organization goes to different areas around the county to provide overdose antidote training, suggest recovery services, and give individuals and families other resources that also address other mental health disorders.
The "Hope One for Youth" branch launched in 2024 and focuses on giving specialized substance use prevention services to children and teens.
"The message we want residents to take away is that no one should feel alone in this struggle," said Brolo. "Burlington County has a lot of resources available to support them, and no one should feel ashamed about reaching out for help."
