WOODLAND TOWNSHIP, NJ — An 82-year-old man was identified as the driver who died after he crashed his SUV into a home on Monday, New Jersey State Police said.
At around 2 p.m., troopers responded to a collision at mile marker 42.9 along County Road 563.
According to early evidence, George C. Sears Jr., of Toms River, was driving south in a Subaru SUV when he lost directional control.
The SUV left the road to the right, hit two fences, and a home. The Subaru caught fire and spread flames to the house.
Sears Jr. died at the scene.
Police believe Sears Jr. had a medical emergency that caused the SUV to drive off the road, according to ABC.
"It's horrible for my neighbors who are 80 years old being displaced right now," Benito Renaudo told the outlet about the homeowners who were inside at the time and not injured.
Susan A. Sears, 76, of Toms River, was in the passenger seat at the time of the crash. She was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, officials added.
The crash is still under review.
