Arbor Day Past and Present in Moorestown

Boy Scouts answered the call during last year's State Arbor Day in Moorestown. This years' Arbor Day is April 29.

Moorestown, NJ -- Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, is a day to celebrate the many benefits trees give to us by planting a tree.

Last year the state held its Arbor Day event in Moorestown, and many volunteers planted 75 trees at Wesley Bishop Park. Those trees are doing well and will provide shady spots for years to come, but young trees need a little help their first few years (mulch and water) to thrive.

Mulching 75 trees is a daunting task, so the Moorestown Tree Panting and Preservation Committee put out a call for volunteers. On April 5, the Boy Scouts of Troop 601 heeded the call and mulched the new (and even some established) Wesley Bishop trees.

With guidance from their leaders and members of the Committee, the trees were properly mulched to protect the trees from landscaping equipment and to retain moisture. The trees will have gator bags attached by the committee to ensure water needs are met.

A big THANK YOU to the Scouts of Troop 601 for their help in preserving our trees!

This year’s Arbor Day celebration will take place on April 29, 10 a.m., at the William Allen Middle School. Five trees will be planted with funding provided by student fundraising and donations.

The Moorestown and Middle School Garden Clubs will take part, and the Middle School Honors Chorus will provide entertainment.

Approximately 200 saplings from the New Jersey Tree Recovery Program will be distributed to the public. Join us on April 29 to celebrate Arbor Day and plant a tree!
