At the federal level in the United States, policy makers have focused on implementing state standards to ensure students are reaching proficiency levels, particularly in reading and math. Over the past several years, proficiencies have improved across the nation, but the focus on this category has yielded the unintentional neglect of gifted students –those who are already beyond proficiency and have the capacity to further their studies.
A recent study released by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation assigned grades to each state rating their policies for academically talented children, and the results are nothing short of dismal. Not a single state received an A, while the majority received a D. Clearly this is an area where schools are lacking; if you have a child who is academically gifted, it’s likely going to be necessary to supplement their education with a program designed to help them reach their full potential. Not properly challenging a gifted student can be just as detrimental to the education process as neglecting a child who needs help in one area or another.

It’s important to identify as early as possible if your child should be tested for admission into a gifted program, or if he or she should be working on coursework at a higher grade level to match their current learning capacity.
